XTREAM ARENA VIDEO
Recorded, edited, mixed and mastered by Devin Ferguson
An insight about the night from photographer Jason Rubin of JMRImages.
I arrived during Katie and the Honky Tonks load-in, and placed my gear backstage during Ian's soundcheck. As a small bonus upon arrival, prior to heading to the green room, I was asked by the venue to capture some shots of Ian during soundcheck, as he was donning an Iowa Heartlanders jersey. How could I decline THAT opportunity?!
But I digress. This evening was all about Katie & the Honky Tonks, and their inaugural performance at an arena. My goal was to capture BTS shots as well as their performance, documenting anything and everything I could.
They went all out for this show, bringing on board a videographer, a HMUA, stagehand, and even someone to tend to the merch table up on the concourse, right next to the headliner's merch table. Oh, did I mention even a custom-made outfit was created for Katie? This custom western wear designer, Snake Farm Creative in Eldridge, IA, had even crafted outfits for country artists Read Connolly, Kaitlin Butts, and even superstar Miranda Lambert.
Prior to the show, I got to hang out in the green room, chatting with the band and crew, capturing some BTS shots, such as Katie getting into hair and makeup, and even grabbed a fun shot of the band to promote their debut single, 'Two-Steppin' in the Shower'. After a chill time back there with everyone, it was out into the venue to capture shots of their set.
While this wasn't the first time I had stage access during Katie and the Honky Tonk's performance, it felt way different due to the venue. I started off by capturing shots of them heading up the steps and onto the stage, then it was a few quick shots here and there of the band members, as I didn't want to spend too much time on there, possibly becoming some sort of interference. I turned on the stealth mode, did my thing, then exited just as smoothly.
I had the whole barricade area to myself, which is generally infrequent when photographing a concert. K&tH were truly in their element, and the crowd enjoyed their old-time country sound. I did my usual thing during a concert, grabbing wide, medium, and tight shots throughout the arena. Their set was slated for 45 minutes, and wow, did it fly by! After their exit from the stage, I stood by, waiting for Katie to make her way up to the merch table to meet and greet fans, who were anxiously awaiting her arrival. I grabbed a few candids, as well as a couple of posed shots of Katie with some fans, then it was back down to the green room to pack up my gear and head home. This was by far my most favorite shoot of K&tH, and it was an evening that I'm sure we'll all remember.
